Overview
Using the gardens as a backdrop, the Preschool Environmental Education Program (PEEPs) is designed to educate preschool children through stories, classroom or outdoor activities, guided nature exploration, and a themed-snack. Each 60-minute lesson covers one nature topic such as birds, worms, natural habitats, pond life, trees, etc. Each month, participating classrooms travel to Wing Haven to experience the lesson in the SEED Wildlife & Children’s Garden. This program was born out of the love Mrs. Elizabeth Clarkson had for sharing her garden, knowledge and passion with young visitors. It has been a growing outreach program serving children enrolled in the NC Pre-K and Meck Pre-K classrooms within Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS).
PEEPs is offered at no cost to NC Pre-K and Meck Pre-K classrooms. Classrooms meet on the same day each month, October through May (8 total lessons). Wing Haven supplies all materials and volunteer facilitators, including a healthy snack. The school only needs to provide the transportation to and from Wing Haven. For those classrooms unable to obtain transportation, the program is also offered virtually, with classroom kits delivered each month in lieu of the garden experience.
